Real Steel (2011) is a recent creation from director Shaun Levy who has brought us such titles as Big Fat Liar, The Night At The Museum films and more recently Date Night. Levy's 'recent robot release' is a first attempt at a far higher budget film with a far more serious, emotional and complex story line and I honestly was not disappointed as I sat in my cinema seat scribbling on my trusty notepad.
Real Steal' story line is based around an intriguing not too distant future of 2020 where human boxing has been rendered obsolete and replaced with lean mean fighting machines that wont be able to stop reminding you of one of Michael Bay's 'Transformer battles' every time they throw down. Robots that could hit harder and take more beatings were the logical next step for a sport slowly corrupted by profits, designed ultimately to give the crowd exactly what they want, TOTAL VIOLENCE! I must admit, this is quite a cool concept as such a futuristic sport provides a far more realistic basis for audiences to fantasize about one day watching giant robots duke it out for real, least more real than a giant alien robot disguising itself as a Mack Truck.
Charlie Kenton, played by Hugh Jackman is a once semi-professional boxer now washed up low life, hopelessly in debt struggling to keep his head above water amongst a seemingly endless list of debt sharks and people who he owes opening to the film portrays Charlie as a hopeless has-been desperate to make a buck, fighting a remote controlled robot to pay off his debts or be. beaten within an inch of his life." After he is granted surprise custody of his estranged 11 year old son Max (Dakota Goyo) following the death of Charlie's ex- girlfriend (Max's mother) the crude and careless nature of Jackman's character becomes clearly evident as he begins scheming to exploit money out of his own son. An obvious product placement occurs in the film which runs off this idea as Charlie seems to care not, that his 11 year old son continuously stays up, pulling all night benders on Dr. Pepper. May as well 'plug em' here too right Shaun? sips can of Dr. Pepper* Ahhhhhhh Delicious. br>
I was most impressed with Dakota Goyo's acting in this film having never really recognized him on the silver screen before as he dished out a confident, fresh, authentic and in many places humorous performance for a 12 year old actor working along side celebrity A-lister Hugh Jackman, who's own performance was solid but somewhat predictable in parts. The relationship between Charlie and Max throughout the plot is a familiar father-meets-son structure as the pair's rapport slowly begins to build along the way as metal begins to fly.
Evangeline Lilly better known as 'Kate' from Lost plays the supporting female role of Bailey, long time friend and daughter of Charlie's former trainer. Initially, there appeared to be some rough and playful on camera sexual chemistry between Jackman and Lilly. Levy subtly juxtaposes in awkward humor which fits well with this pair's on screen relationship. Sadly this chemistry seemed to fizzle out as the plot continues and the two characters are meant to be falling back in love. I simply wasn't buying it. Rather than a hot and steamy first kiss during an emotional scene on Bailey's balcony, we are presented with a seemingly unintended but extremely awkward performance as the two embrace. I enjoyed seeing Lilly in this film however i feel she deserved a stronger role in the plot.
Levy managed to keep me engaged throughout this somewhat familiar story line due to the awesome and well constructed robot fight scenes spotted throughout the film. The addition of the boxing ring, the crowd, commentary and trainers controlling these impressive CGI creations all created a fresh approach to the robot sci-fi blockbuster genre. There are some extremely awesome fight sequences throughout the film so that even a Transformers-hater will be gripping his Malteeser bag too tightly as the carnage ensues. Levy does well in these scenes to humanize the fighting robots to encourage an emotional response during their fights, which seemed to work on me and suspend the feel i was just viewing a movie about Rock Em Sock Em Robots. Whats a boxing movie without a montage? I loved Levy's homage to Avildson's Rocky films and Stallone's training and fight sequences from the 1970s as i enjoyed listening to a catchy rock anthem humming. Life in the fast lane! but was it a cliché or a classic at work? I'll leave it to you to decide.
My only concern with the robot fights was the endless repetition of the 'bad ass rock' music that instinctively began playing every time one jumped on screen which i found almost as predictable as Charlie begging every next character he meets to hand out a loan. There are also a few noticeably weak points in the script which I must admit, Jackman does very well to cover up with his experience rich and skillful acting. The ending was satisfactory as the plot's conclusion draws attractive parallels to Charlie's boxing past as he gets his 'one last chance at redemption, however there were many unanswered questions such as the fate of Charlie's son and where he will live that Levy did not address in concluding his film.
In Summary, Real Steel was an impressive new addition to kick ass robot films currently out there and offers a thrilling, family friendly October Blockbuster with multiple layers to the themes and plot of the story so few will be disappointed. I give Real Steel 7/10.
Twilight (2008) Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarries and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn’t expect much of anything to change. But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she’s ever met. He’s nothing like anyone she’s ever met, period. He’s intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance – unorthodox because Edward really isn’t like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal. That’s right – vampire. But he doesn’t have fangs – that’s just in the movies. And he doesn’t…Twilight full movie online free Duration: 122 min Release: 2008 IMDb: 5. 2.
